Japan has long been considered one of the most technologically advanced countries in the world. When it is not the creator of new technological advancements, Japan has often been a first-mover in terms of adopting them. The development of social media in the West, however, has been growing at a rapid pace while Asia lags behind. Although Japanese individuals have been embracing the new web 2.0 technologies, the involvement from Japanese companies has been far less keen. The opportunity for their involvement, however, is present and can be utilised if considerations such as language and cultural viewpoints are taken. With this, the ability for companies to engage the social media and reach their consumers will increase. The following analyses the current state of social media in Japan and highlights issues that are important to businesses who may be considering entering the social media space in Japan.
