Japan's capital is Tokyo and it is also the most populous city with 12 million residents. Japanese is the official language and the system of government in place is that of a parliamentary democracy with constitutional monarchy.

Japan is an economic powerhouse, with the world's 2nd largest economy (by nominal GDP). Banking, insurance, real estate, retailing, transportation, telecommunications and construction are all major industries of Japan. Japan is home to some of the world's leading companies. Forbes' 2009 Global 2000 report that lists the biggest companies in the world with Toyota Motors at 3rd place leading the way for Japan. Japan has a total of 288 companies in the list of 2000.


Japan is at the forefront when it comes to technology, always a pioneer and early adopter of modern technology. Japan's advancement in cyberspace is a significant representation of Asia's capabilities to the West. The Japanese, with their high internet literacy rate, have made several Web 2.0 technologies a crucial part of their lifestyles.

The Japanese form the biggest segment of the Blogosphere, are the most active users on Twitter, and have made Mixi one of the biggest Asian social networking sites. These numbers are huge and bear important implications for businesses in Japan and those looking to enter Japan. Language and cultural barriers, however, have hampered several businesses from leveraging on the social media sphere in Japan.
