Brief History

In the 16th century, the Philippines Islands were part of the Spanish colony but they were surrendered to the United States in 1898 following the Spanish-American War. In 1935, Manuel Quezon was elected president when Philippines became a self-governing commonwealth and his task was to prepare the country for independence after a ten-year transition. During World War II, the islands feel under the Japanese but the US forces and Filipinos fought to regain control and succeeded. The Republic of the Philippines attained its independence on 4th July 1946 and Manuel Acuña Roxas was the first president of the independent republic.


Geography

Philippines is located in Southeastern Asia, in the archipelago between the Philippine Sea and the South China Sea, east of Vietnam.

Land – 298, 270 sq km
Water – 1830 sq km

Climate

Tropical Marine; northeast monsoon (November – April); southwest monsoon (May to October).

Environmental issues

Uncontrolled deforestation in watershed areas; soil erosion; air and water pollution in major urban centers; coral reef degradation; increasing pollution of mangrove swamps that are important fish breeding grounds.
