1. Introduction
Merlion in Dream

The social media scene in Singapore is a tale of two contrasting situations: The netizens fervently use social media in their everyday lives, utilizing the latest social media tools to date. Even the government has taken laudable steps into engaging the blogosphere. However, businesses are generally still skeptical about the benefits of using social media and are contented to use the traditional forms of media to communicate with their audience.

This imbalance unwraps an opportunity for businesses to tap on the wide reach and influence of social media in Singapore. A growing favorable social media environment, coupled with increasing internet usage amongst younger Singaporeans, compels companies to take action towards utilizing social media lest they miss the chance to connect with the consumers.

2. Background Information about Singapore

e
Singapore's people are mainly descendants of immigrants from the Malay Peninsula, China, the Indian sub-continent and Sri Lanka. In the absence of a "Singaporean" culture, they have gradually acquired a distinct identity as Singaporeans while still retaining their traditional practices, customs and festivals. There are four main racial groups, namely the Chinese (75.2%) , Malay (13.6%), Indian (8.8%) and Others (2.4%).

Common, local adjectives used to describe Singaporeans are "Kiasu", "Kiasi" (fear of losing out and fear of death respectively, in Hokkien) and they share a creole language termed "Singlish" ( a mix of English with Malay, dialects and local slangs).
