We have placed ourselves in your shoes as a practitioner who is interested in Thailand's overall media landscape, especially about the social media scene. This wiki page will provide you with a better understanding of Thailand's media landscape, her social setting and cultural environment.

In a nutshell (click here for a slideshow on the main gists), Web 2.0 (consisting of social media and peer media) is not taking off as smoothly in Thailand as other leading countries such as Japan or Singapore. This is primarily due to the lack of supporting Information Technology (IT) infrastructure, which is slowly but surely being developed. Thus far, only large Multi-National Corporations (MNCS) with deep pockets have begun to construct IT facilities to encourage the growth and usage of the Internet. Nonetheless, despite the lackluster internet capabilities, many users in Thailand are still actively blogging and interacting online.

Presently, mobile media is extremely popular with the Thais. There are over 22 million mobile phone owners as opposed to the over 9 million Internet users - of which 55% are using dial-up. Hence, many advertisers have added social elements, such as mobile downloads, to their mobile advertising campaigns.

When doing business in Thailand, always remember to tread carefully and practice cultural sensitivity. Do take note that the Thais hold much reverence for their King and that the Thais are mostly conservative and collectivistic.

Businesses looking to engage in Thailand's social media are advised to continue to utilize her mobile media and mainstream media such as television and print.

We hope that the information provided will give you a head start in understanding the social media scene in Thailand.
