An interview with Singaporean Social Media enthusiast Amelia Wong

Singapore: From the Creators - DIGITAL MEDIA ACROSS ASIA

1. What stimulated an interest in you to start blogging or engaging in social media? Are you heavily dependent on social media in your course of work in the PR firm?
To begin with I really enjoyed food (cooking/baking and eating haha) so I thought why not start a food blog? As for social networking, it is for obvious reasons - to keep in touch with my friends :) All in all, it is because social media brings me so much convenience with tools like the wiki and social bookmarking.

Yes I am heavily dependent, haha I do 100% digital PR so I have to Facebook all the time! LOL. No but seriously, when it comes to official pages and groups on Facebook, it can get pretty intensive since FB keeps changing its features and layout.

2. Do you think that the goal of achieving "blogger independence" runs in conflict with the Singapore government's call for internet "self-regulation"? How do you think internet "self regulation" will affect the blogosphere in Singapore in the present and the future?
I think there is no conflict there at all. Being independent and having a voice means you ought to know the basic rules of communications, because the rules when face to face and being online doesn't change, only the form and methods differs. So self-regulation is giving us bloggers more freedom ain't it? Unless I'm defining it wrongly, please help me out here, hee.

3. What do you think are the current trends of Singaporean companies in terms of making use of social media to communicate with their consumers? Will those trends persist in the future in Singapore?
HAHAHA companies in Singapore are so slowwwwwwwwwwww (can't emphasize more) to adopt social media. They're extremely wary, they more often than not throw out great ideas that the team brainstormed so hard for and was so excited about. However, I believe that there is a mentality shift slowly...there are those that are wary and there are those that are so new to it they'll allow the agency to handle it all (hooray). I feel that perhaps in an estimate 2 years time, many companies will allow themselves to get their hands dirty in social media, because in 2 years time, it will be a necessity and no longer a good to have or a choice.
