Australia is located in the Southern Hemisphere. It has an area of nearly 7.7 million square kilometres.
It is the world's sixth largest nation after Russia, Canada, China, the USA and Brazil. It comprises of the world’s smallest continent, the major island of Tasmania, and a number of other islands in the Indian and Pacific Ocean. Its capital city is Canberra with approximately 60% of the population concentrated in and around the mainland state capitals of Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide.

Australia experiences many of nature's more extreme phenomena; including droughts, floods, tropical cyclones, severe storms, bushfires, and the occasional tornado.
