Four Important Points for Social Media Users in Hong Kong
1. Privacy Policy
All firms with a presence on the internet need to make decisions with regard to their privacy policy. Chinese authorities heavily censor politically sensitive material. Due to the controlling nature of the Chinese and the innate culture of citizen journalism, firms will often have to make compromising decisions between integrity and customers.
2. Segmentation
Due to the highly segmented structure of the Hong Kong industry and population a broad based approach to social media is unlikely to be successful. (See section on Culture for details on segmentation)
3. Globalisation
Firms should be aware that globalization affects Hong Kong disproportionately. As a global trade and financial center, Hong Kong experiences intensified globalization. Therefore, cultures and markets are constantly evolving and firms need updated market information to keep up with the rapidly changing landscape.
4. Opportunities
According to Mike Catherall, a copyrighter and avid blogger from Ogilvy and Mather Hong Kong, “online presence is almost non- existent amongst the large corporations we work with.” Hong Kong therefore presents firms with a unique opportunity to pioneer the entry into social media, without facing much competition.
