Mobile Phone Penetration

Hong Kong is one of the few countries in the world with a more than 100% mobile phone penetration rate. According to Digital 21 Strategy, mobile penetration rate stood at 163% as of October 2008, which meant that the average Hong Konger is likely to have more than one phone. This places it squarely as one of the highest rated countries in terms of mobile ownership, not only in Asia, but in the world.

Mobile Penetration and Internet Connectivity
A report on Hong Kong Telecommunications, Mobile and Broadband by MarketResearch.com stated that 3G subscriptions continue to grow in a competitive market, consisting of 2.9 million 2.5G and 3G subscribers in 2008. Accounting for nearly 25% of total mobile subscribers, this pits Hong Kong against Macau as the frontliner in the Asian mobile market.
Mobile internet access is expected to grow rapidly as the demand for real time financial information and other news increases. Furthermore, as the demand for information-on-the-go increases, competition should drive prices down and increase penetration significantly.
