Indonesia: Technology ImplicationsThis is a featured page

In this page you will found some of social media tools' implications on Indonesia's public sector and Business.

WEB 2.0 AND INDONESIAN EDUCATION SECTOR

The Ministry of Education in Indonesia has a central website (http://www.jardiknas.net) listing various educational websites both from within the Ministry as well as external websites. Indonesia: Technology Implications - DIGITAL MEDIA ACROSS ASIA

Edu2000.org
is one such website combining web2.0 and education. Edu2000 aims to provide educational content as well as build an online community around education with the motto “Finding, creating and sharing educational content”. Most of the content is shared in the form of videos, which are classified and organized in webpages with a preface or comments by teachers. Topics range from Alexander the Great in history to organic farming. The formation of this virtual community facilitates discussion between students, staff and alumni.

"The concept is sharing. Therefore other school can access materials from other school, except they wish not to do so. Also, once the local materials ready, then only membership schools can access the materials with samples will be provided for public," said Kosasih Iskandarsjah, founder of Edu2000.org.

Kosasih told us that there are currently 353 members for the school website in which about 30 are teachers and the rest are students. Most of those who have signed up are mostly the final year students (Grade 9). He also mentioned that social media in Indonesia is slowly picking up as internet speed is improving and internet rates are more affordable. Currently, most of the Internet access is from schools, offices and internet cafes.

Kosasih is currently in talks with other schools and his target is to have 50 schools signed up. As for local content, they are now in the process of developing their own video clips together with a school in Surabaya and a consultant from the ministry of education. The local video clips (all about middle school science) are expected to be ready by June 2008.

WEB 2.0 AND INDONESIAN BUSINESSES

Web 2.0 has been embraced by Indonesian Businesses since around early 2008. These are only some examples of the early adopters who have taken the first step to tap into the potential of Web 2.0. To find out more samples of Web 2.0 usage in Indonesian companies, do check our case studies page.

1. PR FIRM

Our request for interview with a PR firm in Indonesia was interestingly responded with two
blog posts
.

"As PR professionals, the challenge is how to keep up with these changes, see how it changes us, observe it and experiment with it, and come up with a strategy on how these new media can provide an additional channel for us to get our messages across," said Maverick, a PR consultancy of blue-chip companies and respected organizations.

While Maverick acknowledged the fact that there are sensitivity issues involved in engaging customers using the new media and that there are virtually no rules in the blogosphere, it is also a fact that the blogs and bloggers are indeed out there online. The choice is then up to individual businesses to engage the bloggers and keep up with happenings in the blogosphere to put the media into good use.

On the topic of corporate blogging, Maverick also expressed their views on the importance of blogging for a purpose. The blog post in response to our enquiry on corporate blogging can be found here.

2. TOYOTA LUNCHEON

On 20th February 2008, Toyota invited several prominent bloggers in Indonesia to a blogger's luncheon. The purpose of the luncheon was to reveal Toyota's plan to launch their new Corolla Altis. The company has acknowledged the power of bloggers and decided to involve them in their new marketing campaign. During the luncheon, bloggers got to see and take pictures of the new Corolla Altis.

“We have seen the rapid growth of blogs in Indonesia, supported by the continuous development of IT infrastructure in this country. This is why we started to engage bloggers…,” said Achmad Rizal, Dept. Head of Communication Dept. of Toyota Astra Motor.

When questioned about the freedom of speech in the blogsphere and the risk of having negative comments, Rizal responded positively by saying that the company understands the risks involved and is ready to take in constructive criticism. They want to be the first mover and tap into the potential of the blogosphere before it is too late.

A total of about 15 bloggers were invited to the event. Many of the bloggers invited were blogging in Bahasa Indonesia.
Unspun
and Maverick were the two that blogged in English. While Maverick gave an objective write-up on the event, Unpsun took on a personal point of view. He commented on Toyota's courage to take this initiative to engage bloggers but at the same time gave his own opinions on the shortcomings in terms of execution. He also summarized that the overall effect of the event was quite promising as it managed to gather quite a number of blog posts and most of them were rather positive. It was known that at least 9 other bloggers blogged about the event.

Vios Club Indonesia is a similar launch of Toyota where owners of Toyota can share, e.g blog about their experiences with the net.

The Toyota luncheon 2008 was conceptualized and arranged by Virtual Consulting. Indonesia: Technology Implications - DIGITAL MEDIA ACROSS ASIA

3. CEO BLOGGING - IRFAN SETIAPUTRA

Indonesia's Social Media - Social Media and PR across Asia

Irfan Setiaputra
, managing director of Cisco Indonesia, is the author of http://irfansetiaputra.com/. His blog serves mainly to discuss new technology and events within the company. When describing new or collaborative technology, he does not only suggest how Cisco can be involved but also other companies which already offer such products. Internally, he describes certain Cisco events and the company’s response.

Although Indonesian CEO blogs are a rare occurrence, this blog is a slight indication that upper management may be starting to realize the relevance and influence of maintaining a blog. This, however, may still be at the end of the long-tail as
Irfan Setiaputra represents a technology-based industry. Hence, this blog initiative may be influenced by its head office, which already encourages participation and social media in the company.
