Interview with Ivy Tan
(Singaporean Blogger and Social Media Enthusiast)

About you

1) When did you first start blogging and what made you join the local blogging scene?
I started blogging in 1999, but didn't join the local blogging scene until 2008. I joined it mainly for networking purposes for my day job but also to promote my blog in the local blogosphere (now that I'm back).

2) What do you usually write about, and why?
I usually write about my opinions on things I observe from my daily life and a few topics I'm more passionate about like learning foreign languages, quirks from world cultures, my latest gadgets and occasionally anime.

3) Where do you get your inspiration for your choice of topics?
Mainly from observation or experience but I also get inspired by certain books, magazine articles and other blogs.

The local social media landscape

4) What do you think about issues of privacy that accompany Web 2.0? Are you very careful while maintaining your overall online identity?
Privacy is not really an issue for me since I practice self-censorship to a certain degree. I wouldn't write entries that are overly political in nature, or are directly related to work for example. But I try to put as much of myself out there for everyone to read - this includes current and future bosses. Social media can very empowering when it comes to career development. And as long as you do not offend too many people, or better yet demonstrate your expertise online, I don't see the need to be secretive about your identity.

5) Have you/a client of yours ever faced a crisis that was handled mainly by using Social Media tools?
No. Social media is still in its infancy in terms of corporate use. So I don't think many corporations, especially traditional corporations like banks would want to use social media to handle crises yet.

6) How has Singapore's blogosphere evolved ever since you've started blogging, till now?
I'm still very new to the local blogosphere so I can't say much. From the last few months, there has been a dramatic shift from blogging to microblogging. Lots of bloggers use Plurk and Twitter to communicate to each other now (and as such write less blog entries). But I think this phenomenon is not limited to Singapore - it's a global trend. Since January 2009, I've also been seeing a lot more podcasts locally.

7) How immersed do you think, is Singapore in the social media scene?
Quite immersed - especially compared to its neighbors. With the advent of more affordable broadband of mobile, more and more people are using social media tools on the go.

8) Is there any aspect of our local social media scene that strikes you as being something negative? How can it be changed?
Lack of experts. While we may have many people who are passionate about driving Singapore's social media scene forward and have pretty good grasps on social media, I have yet to see a local Chris Brogan.

9) What future do you see for social media (and blogging) in Singapore?
As social media penetrates the masses and as the economy continues to plunge, more and more corporations will feel the need to cater to the social media scene in Singapore.

10) Do you think that the internet is very regulated here in Singapore?
Not really. Or at least, whatever regulation exists pales in comparison to the great firewall of China. And with government bodies starting to embrace social media, whatever regulation that were imposed in the past would likely be more relaxed in the future.
