Analysis of demograpics

Japan, located in the east of Asia, is the tenth most populated country in the world. As of May 2009, Japan's population declined to a figure of about 127.5 million. A vast majority, almost 98.5%, of the population is Japanese, with a 0.6% minority of Koreans, 0.4% of Chinese. Other ethnic groups make up the remaining 0.6%. The age structure of the Japanese population is skewed, with 64.3% people in the age range of 15-64 years and an ever increasing number of senior citizens (65 years and above) that makes up 22.2% of the population. While this is likely to pose future demographic dilemmas, it also highlights opportunities for businesses in the "silver industry" (products and services aimed at people above 60 years). However, the cultural inclination of the Japanese minority also implies a major barrier to the success of potential entrants.

Japan boasts one of the highest life expectancies in the world, together with a 99% literacy rate. Both these factors bear important implications for businesses. The technology literate population of Japan carves high potential for businesses to abandon traditional media for social, personal and interactive media. An important consideration, however, is the fact that the first language of 99% of the population in Japan is Japanese.
