1. What is Yahoo! 360 plus' role in the social media climate in Vietnam?
It is the number one blogging community in Vietnam, built by Yahoo! for local users since Yahoo!360 closed down.
2. What purpose does BloggerViet serve? What role does it play on top of Yahoo’s own news portal?
The blog is a way for us to catch the latest news and trends which we might not get from the providers. It is complimentary to our news product, not to replace it.
3. How pervasive/important is social media as a source of news and information to the Vietnamese today?
Quite important, but it could not interchange with the traditional news agencies.
4. What difficulties do you face in maintaining that news blog? Any particular issues with local censorship / blocking?
No. Local censorship/blocking because we do not go into too hard news on our blog. Those contents can be obtained through our news portal. Challenges for the blog should be managing the users and community. Online courtesy is still very new in Vietnam.
5. How would you describe Vietnam’s social media environment today?
Very vibrant. There is a lot of potential for companies to explore.
6. What does this mean for businesses and their relationships with clients? Do you know any examples of businesses making good use of social media to enhance their services and reputations in Vietnam?
More and more companies are using blogs as a way to promote their products/services. A successful example should be Nokia. They engaged bloggers to write about their past contests, made these blogs to mention their contest websites, and in turn, they gained hundred thousands of visits to their websites.
7. As a blogger for Yahoo! yourself, what do you think are important things to remember when communicating with your readers and other users in the community? How do you build relationships with these users?
To me, it is important to remember what I write is affecting millions of users. Even though the way I position myself when writing on the blogs is not representative of Yahoo!, what I write will be definitely published on the blog and eventually on its Front Pages. I have to be really careful with my words and thoughts as it might reflect badly on the editorial team. Also, to build good relationship with users, I think of myself as a user so that I can write about what they are really interested in and what we still lack from the mainstream content.
8. The Web 2.0 wave has hit a lot of countries. I do believe that in Singapore, it has not felt the full force of it, yet. How is the situation like in Vietnam?
Users are getting more and more familiar with it cos they are very tech-savvy and eager to learn.
9. What are the popular Web 2.0 applications that Vietnamese have caught on?
Most of the popular applications like Facebook are gaining more and more users, even though users in Vietnam might just go there for games.
Youtube is also popular even if the loading speed in Vietnam leaves much to be desired. Yahoo! is still the market leader with many products that target the local users.
