Singapore: Case Studies

  1. The Case of Pfingo - Its Launch in Singapore

As social media usage in businesses is still in its infancy in Singapore, examples are few and far in between, much less to determine their success. There are, however, some corporate blogs that look promising and some that require more improvement.

Blogging Right

In general, the following blogs have taken the leap forward to start engaging their potential customers in the blogosphere with frequent updates. What they need in order to succeed would be to leverage on their blogs for social media marketing, rather than just treating it as a publishing or 2-way communications platform.

  • Pitstop Cafe - a more familiar name among the many examples.
They update frequently, have 2-way communications (chatterbox is even available for casual exchanges), high transparency (blog is filled with pictures of their members/ contributors) and the language used is engaging their readers. In addition, they did a commendable job in handling a complaint recently. "Nobody is perfect, but you can see and feel that they strive to be the best" -- Kian Ann, Blogopreneur.

Other Examples

Blogging Wrong

The common problems with these blogs would be low frequency in their updates and sometimes, written in too formal language.

  • MECPEC - There are only 2 posts since its creation on 2nd March 2007.
We are glad that this company has taken the first step into social media. According to Peter Flaschner, founder of the Blog Studio, "any company not committed to the process shouldn't blog. Blogging requires an investment of time. The smaller the company, the greater the investment. A blog started and abandoned can do more harm than good." [source: Robert Scoble and Shel Isreal (2006). Naked Conversations. Thorns in the Roses (pp. 144) New Jersey: John Wiley & Sons, Inc]. Thus, we look forward to more frequent updates from them. Instead of blogging in the name of "admin", add a personal touch and increase transparency by putting in an avatar and name of the author!

Within a short time span of less than 2 weeks, a total of 13 posts have been created. This goes to indicate the high frequency in their updates. In addition, they offered tips on team building in their posts, which goes to display their expertise and build up their credibility in this arena. However, it appears to have been abandoned for almost 1 year.

  • DragonBackMedia - Consistent updates seen from June - Dec 2006; Picked up again in March 2007
People love photos and pictures in blogs, way to go DragonBackMedia. Glad to see that they have picked up their blog once again, keep pushing forward and you will soon reap the rewards on your efforts.

Yesterday I passed by (if I'm not wrong) the air force military camp at Changi and saw their "Notice for the Day" saying something like "Be Vigilant, don't breech security through blogging." As my friend explained to me, apparently alot of guys blog about their army experience thus causing quite a stir. Which, resulted in a special unit just to monitor the army dudes' blogs in case they leak out sensitive issues.
Do you find this valuable?
